The release of the sequel to The Purge has become a box office hit, so far bringing in $96 million worldwide. Due to the success of the sequel, it is likely that The Purge 3 will happen.

Jason Blum, CEO and Founder of Blumhouse Production and producer of The Purge, said he wanted the third film to go back to the origins of the first movie. The next film would take place in the same time as the first film but focus on a different aspect, reported the Epoch Times.

“I would like to tell a story about the Revolutionaries. I would like to tell the story about the first purge. Purge 1 was after five years, Purge 2 after six years; so it would be fun to see the first time it happened,” Blum said.

The first film for The Purge was released last year. It is set in America in a near-future and depicts the horror of a dystopia. The second film The Purge: Anarchy was the most expensive film from the low budget production company, costing about $9 million to make.

“Normally I make three movies for that amount,” Blum said in an interview with Collider.

The Purge 3 could be released next summer if it happens.
