You can’t keep a good character down for long and in this case, it’s David Brent, Ricky Gervais’ hapless, terrible boss from the original U.K. The Office. After David left the office, he went on the road to try a career in music and a spin-off movie chronicling his journey will be hitting theaters.
BBC Films announced that it will back the project and production will start next year, notes Digital Spy. The studio notes that the film shows what David has been up to since leaving Wernham Hogg and he’s now a traveling sales rep, hence the title of the film, Life on the Road. Of course, David hasn’t stopped dreaming about becoming a rock star.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, BBC films said that David envisions the movie as “Scorsese shooting the Rolling Stones,” but it becomes a traditional “where are they now” documentary.
“He has to take a few weeks off work and cash in a couple of pensions, because the session musicians in the band are costing him more than he’s getting in ticket sales. Tragic,” BBC Films said about the movie.
Gervais has revived David several times, including for cameos for the U.S. Office. Last year, he did a special called The Office Revisited, which aired during the BBC’s Red Nose Day for charity. He also teased that Netflix might be interested in doing a David spin-off, but it looks like we’re getting a movie instead.
