Iron Man 3 director Shane Black has been tapped to helm Sony Pictures' The Destroyer.

The film is based off Warren Murphy's adventure series of the same name, reports Deadline, who was the first to learn of Black boarding the project. Jim Uhls (Fight Club) co-wrote the script with James Mullaney.

Mullaney co-wrote the series with Murphy, before eventually continuing the series on his own until 2008.

The Destroyer follows New Jersey cop Remo Williams who was framed and then sentenced to death. His execution is bungled and he ends up being brought back to life. Williams then finds himself working for the government agency known as CURE. He is then partnered up with an Asian assassin named Chiun.

Together the pair work for the clandestine agency helping stop or prevent anyone attempting to go against the United States.

"The Destroyer is a two-fisted classic and deserves no less than the genius of Shane Black," Michael De Luca, president of production at Columbia, said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We couldn't be more excited about his vision for this character."

Black recently directed Iron Man 3 and has also helmed Kiss, Kiss, Bang Bang and is currently attached to direct both Nice Guys, with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe starring, and Doc Savage.
