Sinead O’Connor has been better known for her tumultuous personal life than by her music in recent years, but she’s hoping to change that with her new album I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss coming out.
In a cover story for Billboard, however, O’Connor talks about her short-lived marriage to Barry Herridge as well as being “irregular.”
“I’m still best mates with him,” she said of Herridge, whom she was married to for just 16 days in 2011.
But the conversation quickly changed to her album, which she believes changed her life. “I have never had a better time making music in my life,” she said.
After a 2012 suicide attempt and break from her career, she’s now refocused and more accepting of herself.
“I gave being a ‘regular’ woman a good few tries,” she said “There is pressure to be a ‘regular’ woman from the minute you’re born, so I was duty-bound to try. But I’m ‘irregular.’ I don’t try not to be irregular anymore.”
She added of gaining some perspective with age, “I have learned to love myself unconditionally.”
O’Connor hasn’t had a single on the Hot 100 chart since 1990’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” made No. 60.
