Steve Carell may be getting strong notices for a dramatic turn in Foxcatcher, but the former Office star isn’t straying too far from comedy. Carell has been linked to a unique Looney Toons spin-off movie Warner Bros. is working on.
For some reason, Warner Bros. has decided to make a movie about Acme, the fictional company that made all the dangerous products Wile E. Coyote would use (incorrectly) to capture Road Runner. Acme also made every other product in the Looney Tunes universe. It was also a catch-all name for other companies throughout Golden Age Hollywood, sort of like today’s 555 area code.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, which first reported on the project last night, the plot for the film is unknown. X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were hired and Carell’s Crazy Stupid Love directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in talks to direct.
THR did say that Looney Tunes characters would not appear in the film, which is not being planned as a CG/live action hybrid. It has been in development since 2010.
Meanwhile, Deadline reported earlier this week that Carell will star in Freeheld with Julianne Moore (his Crazy Stupid Love co-star). This New Jersey-set gay rights drama was originally supposed to star Zach Galifianakis, but he dropped out. Carell will take his role.
While Carell is expected to get his first Oscar nomination for Foxcatcher, he also stars in Disney’s much lighter Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day adaptation.
Foxcatcher opens on Nov. 14 and Alexander hits theaters on Oct. 10.
