The Australian couple that left behind a baby boy born with Down syndrome had at least one person who was not angry with them--the Thai surrogate that carried the child.
21-year-old Pattaramon Chanbua from the town of Sri Racha, Thailand, first searched a surrogacy agency online. With the agency promising almost $10,000, she considered the idea. With debt to pay off and two children to take care off, she decided to become a surrogate, reported the Associated Press.
After carrying the twins, Chanbua gave birth to a boy and a girl, but the boy, known as “Gammy” was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart condition. Chanbua said the agency knew about the condition of Gammy while she was still pregnant, but did not inform her. The couple took the healthy baby girl with them, but left behind the boy.
Chanbua has not been paid full by the surrogacy agency located in Bangkok, Thailand. Despite the situation, she is not angry with the couple.
“I want to see that they love the baby girl as much as my family loves Gammy. I want her to be well taken care of,” Chanbua said.
According to BBC News, a spokesman for Australia’s foreign affairs was discussing the situation with Thai authorities over surrogacy issues.
Chanbua is left with the task of caring for Gammy. An Australian charity organization created an online campaign to raise money for Gammy and has raised almost $200,000 since July 22.
Chanbua is grateful, and wants Gammy to have a good life.
"Actually, I just want the baby to have a house. It doesn't have to be big. I only want him to live in a good house and be comfortable."
