Sylvester Stallone has already begun training for the fifth installment of the Rambo series.

In an interview with Vulture, Stallone said, "I’m getting ready for [Rambo V]. I’m starting to work out. I’m going to be appropriately vicious and all that stuff, but intellectual. A killer with a heart. Smart, yet stupid. Tall, yet short. Broad, but thin. You know what I mean. We’re going to try to cover all the boundaries."

As noted by Cinema Blend, the last Rambo installment, (simply called Rambo), ended with Stallone’s character returning to America, and while, the site notes, the ending seemed like a fitting conclusion to the series, they believe that it is possible that this future installment might be focused on providing a more violent and poetic ending to the series.

Cinema Blend notes that the original pitch for the fifth Rambo film included a plot involving human trafficking and a tone similar to No Country for Old Men. However, he recently told ScreenRant that he was very interested in the current situation in Mexico, stating “I like the whole Mexican situation, what’s going on down there. So I’m working on a formula for it right now.”

As noted by ScreenRant, Stallone was originally “99% sure” that the series had concluded and that Rambo 5 was not going to happen, instead more interested in a prequel to First Blood (the series’s first installment.) With last year’s announcement of Rambo V (subtitled “Last Stand”), Stallone says he’s now "dying" to make one more installment in the franchise.

ScreenRant also noted that a Rambo television series had also been considered, but the rights to Rambo 5 recently picked up by Splendid films.

Furthermore, Stallone told MTV that,“I know there is [another story to tell]. It’s one thing where you lay down the final culmination of your life where you can articulate it, but also act on it where [Rambo] realizes what his destiny really is. It’s not to be a farmer, it’s not to be obscure; it’s to go out in a blaze of glory in a heroic fashion. But is he really doing it for himself or is he doing it because that’s just his id? That’s who he is.”

As noted by ScreenRant, Stallone’s comments imply that Rambo V might retire the character just as 2006’s Rocky Balboa retired Stallone’s famous boxer. Whether this is a metaphorical or literal, more bloody end to the character will have to be seen.
