The summer box office might have a rarity this weekend - a film earning a second weekend at the top. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is looking to reach that feat, even if it does take an incredible nosedive. The film’s only major competition is The Expendables 3, which isn’t expected to clean house.
TMNT exploded at the box office last weekend, earning $65 million in North America, bringing its international total to $97.3 million and earning a sequel already. Still, considering the weak reviews and mixed responses from those who saw it, TMNT might take a big fall in weekend two. Entertainment Weekly predicts $27 million, which sounds about right if it falls over 60 percent.
Expendables 3 brings back the old action star crew from the past two movies. We didn’t like it that much, but fans of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the other members of the team will turn out. Box Office Mojo predicts a $24 million opening, which might even put it behind Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, that’s fairly reasonable, since the second movie opened to $28.6 million.
Up next is Guardians, which should easily make over $20 million in its third weekend, possibly even closer to $25 million.
The buddy comedy Let’s Be Cops has been in theaters since Wednesday, earning $5.2 million so far. Critics have bashed it, but a $16 million weekend would be welcome by Fox.
The Giver is expected to round-out the top 5. The film is based on the Lois Lowry novel, which was acclaimed when it came out. However, many other dystopian YA novels have hit the big screen since and this one won’t perform as well as any of them. It has been met with a mixed response, so anything over $15 million would be a surprise.
