Top actors and popular musicians have a part in this week’s new releases. Selena Gomez stars in a new comedy while Mick Jagger brings the story of the influential Godfather of Soul.

Take a look at the man behind the funk with Get On Up. The PG-13 film showcases James Brown’s rise to stardom, from his early days as a poor child to his groundbreaking singing career. The Mick Jagger produced musical biopic plays for two hours and nineteen minutes. It stars Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.

An adventurer and his crew of misfits fight to keep the universe out of the hands of a villain in Guardians of the Galaxy. After stealing a powerful orb, Peter Quill has become a target for the evil Ronan. As he’s being chased down, he comes to realize all of the destruction the orb can do if the wrong person possesses it. Marvel’s PG-13 adventure is playing for two hours and two minutes in conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters. Its all-star cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro.

A teenager with a crush on his classmate tries to figure out how to get her attention in Behaving Badly. His quest to catch her eye puts him in contact with the mob, strippers, a priest and his friend’s flirtatious mother among others. The one hour and thirty-eight minute comedy stars Selena Gomez, Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Shue, Dylan McDermott and Heather Graham. The limited released film is rated R for sex, language, nudity and drugs.

The death of a young girl inspires her family to help others in Louder Than Words. The terrible tragedy brings her family close together as they set out to build a state of the art children’s hospital in her honor. The PG-13 drama is based on the true story. The film stars David Duchovny, Timothy Hutton and Hope Davis. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-three minutes.

A young man uses running as a means to a better life in 4 Minute Mile. With a goal of earning a track scholarship, he reaches out to his reclusive neighbor, a former track coach, for some guidance. Kelly Blatz, Richard Jenkins, Cam Gigandet, and Kim Basinger star in the PG-13 drama. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-five minutes.

A bachelor party cruise gets scary when the group lands on a Caribbean island in Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. During a snorkeling excursion, one woman discovers a graveyard below the water and catches a deadly virus. When the friends head to a building on the island for help, they find themselves in a research facility for the deadly outbreak with only a few survivors. Sean Astin stars in the unrated thriller. The horror film is running in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-one minutes.

A good-hearted priest is harassed by his local townspeople in Calvary. Despite his attempts to bring peace and happiness, he is threatened during a confession session and is forced to contend with those that are trying to hurt him. The limited released drama runs for one hour and forty minutes. It’s rated R for sex, language, violence and drugs.

A loner sets out to isolate himself from society in Child of God. At a young age without the guidance of parents and a home, he later separates himself from civilization and humanity and becomes a crazed killer. The one hour and forty-four minute crime thriller is based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel. It’s written, directed and stars James Franco. The limited released film is rated R for sex, nudity, language and violence.

Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life both on and off the stage is put in the spotlight with Finding Fela!. Kuti is an artist and revolutionary who openly opposed the Nigerian government of the 1970’s and 1980’s and helped bring democracy to the country. The unrated documentary is playing in limited theaters for two hours.

The documentary, Rich Hill, highlights the lives of three teens growing up in a state of poverty. Each has a story of their own, but are all struggling to survive and better their lives. The unrated film is running in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-one minutes.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy entered 3D theaters this week. Next week, it’ll be joined by two other 3D films, Into the Storm and Step Up All In. Two other big films jumping into the box office race on August 8 are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Hundred-Foot Journy.
