The power of authority, knowledge and revenge drive the characters in this week’s new releases. While some use their influence to cause harm or for the good of others, there are two who just take advantage of the perks.
Two friends dress up as police officers for what they think is a costume party and are mistaken for the real thing in Let’s Be Cops. When they notice that everyone treats them differently, they decide to keep up the charade. They get more than they bargained for when they get caught up in real cop situations. The one hour and forty-four minute comedic adventure stars New Girl’s Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. and Nina Dobrev. It’s rated R for language, sex, nudity, violence and drugs.
A former ally, believed to be dead, comes back to get rid of his old team of mercenaries in The Expendables 3. In order to fight back, former CIA Operative, Barney recruits a younger, more technologically advanced group to take on his classically trained opponents. The PG-13 action film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Glen Powell and UFC star Rhonda Rousey. It runs for two hours and seven minutes.
A young man growing up in a world of blissful equilibrium, learns about the community’s past from the only man with all of the memories in The Giver. As he delves deeper into the area’s history, he finds out that it wasn’t always all roses, but instead much darker and deadlier than that. Now knowing all of the background, he must get out of the area in order to save its tranquility. The PG-13 drama, starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Swift, is based on Lois Lowry’s best-selling novel. It plays for one hour and thirty-seven minutes.
A young musician joins a pop band with an eccentric front man in Frank. He not only has to deal with normal band dynamics, but also with a lead who lives his life wearing a fake head and describing his facial expressions. Michael Fassbender and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the one hour and thirty five minute comedic drama. The limited released film is rated R for language and sex.
Two friends travel to the Italian countryside to taste the local food in The Trip to Italy. In this sequel to the 2010 film The Trip, the two travel throughout the country cracking jokes about pop culture and their surroundings. The unrated comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. The one hour and twenty-six minute film is available in limited theaters.
A young woman comes back from the dead in Life After Beth. Her distraught boyfriend is thrilled to see her, that is, until he realizes she’s now terrorizing the neighborhood as a zombie who eats people. The limited released comedy stars Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, Paul Reiser and Anna Kendrick. The one hour and thirty minute film is rated R for language, violence, sex, nudity, and drugs.
A sewage worker gets stuck inside a septic tank in Septic Man. Trapped during a water contamination problem, he begins to mutate. His only way out is to come face to face with a murderer. The horror film is running in limited theaters for one hour and twenty-seven minutes. It’s rated R for violence and language.
The story of the paleontology team who found the bones of the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex is told in Dinosaur 13. This amazing discovery in 1990 was thwarted by the government, museums and the greed and jealousy of others. Taken away from those that uncovered it, the team from the Black Hills Institute battled for their finding for ten years. The PG documentary is based on the book Rex Appeal: The Amazing Story of Sue, the Dinosaur That Changed Science, the Law, and My Life. The film is running in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-five minutes.
An archeologist investigates a Norse myth in Ragnarok. On his journey to the Russian/Norway border, he unearths a secret that can destroy all around him. The PG-13 thriller is running for one hour and fifty-five minutes in limited theaters.
Fake police officers attempt to fight crime in this week’s Let’s Be Cops, but next week corruption runs rampant in Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Two more touching stories hit theaters on August 22, If I Stay and When the Game Stands Tall.
