Authorities said that two people, one a New York Police Officer, were killed during a collision on a New York interstate Tuesday.
According to New Jersey News 12, authorities said that off-duty NYPD officer, Richard E. Christopher, 32, is among the dead in the crash.
Around 7.a.m. Tuesday morning, Christopher reportedly drove his Dodge pickup truck the wrong way on Interstate 87 and then collided with a Honda CRV. The impact also killed James D. DeVito, 59. Both drivers died at the scene.
The accident happened in Suffern, Rockland County and caused havoc for motorists during the morning commute.
The Mid-Hudson News reported that the New York State Police received assistance Tuesday morning from the Ramapo Town Police, the Thruway Traffic Safety and Maintenance and the Tallman Fire Department.
An investigation into the crash is being conducted by not only the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, but also by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. It is ongoing at this time.
Suffern is approximately 30 miles outside of New York City.
