UFC champion Ronda Rousey is now a Hollywood star, thanks to Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 3, which opened in theaters on Friday. The athlete, who also won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics, shared some experiences on the making of the movie and admitted that she got nervous while watching herself on that big screen.
In her interview with USA Today, Rousey, 27, said that she hopes to see a change in female superheroes in comic books and the movies. Perhaps she’s angling for a role in one?
“I’m tired of watching this thing where the woman's superpower is dumbed down. In The Fantastic Four, the woman is the invisible one. In X-Men,[telekinetic] Jean Grey gets tired all the time,” she said. “Wonder Woman is cool, but she has bulletproof bracelets, while Superman is a bulletproof dude. It's like she has really cool accessories. I think about that a lot.”
Rousey said that she actually liked the fact that Stallone and the Expendables team didn’t give her heavy armor to wear, unlike the guys.
“I think they wanted to show some form and not have me look like a block,” she told USA Today. “But I kept saying, 'Body armor is for mistakes. I don't make any.' I thought it was kind of cool.”
Rousey also spoke with Yahoo Sports about becoming a movie star. Although she was also in Fast & Furious 7, she gets nervous when it comes to seeing herself on a huge screen. In addition, she knows that she still has a long way to go in Hollywood.
“It's a lot simpler for me to critique my fighting as opposed to acting,” she explained. “I'm so new at this and I care so much and I'm trying so hard. But I also have so much to learn that it's easy to doubt my ability to properly critique it.”
Rousey joins The Expendables club in the franchise's third movie and you can see her in action this weekend.
