Three students at North Carolina State University have been working on a nail polish that can detect the date rape drugs, GHB, Rohypnol and Xanax.
According to Viral Global News, the nail polish is colorless and will change colors in the presence of the drugs and warn the wearer. The person will have to stir their drink with their finger in order for the nail polish to detect the drugs. Tests are still being run on the nail polish and it is not yet ready to be released to the public.
The all male founders, Ankesh Madan, Stephen Gray, Tyler Confrey-Maloney and Tasso Von Windheim met at the university. The team said they were thinking of problems in society and drugs used in sexual assault cases came up, reported the Daily Mail.
“Our goal is to invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves from this heinous and quietly pervasive crime,” the team said.
In 2012, there were more than 3,900 reported cases of sexual assault on college campuses nationwide. This number is 50 percent higher than the past three years.
Funding has already begun for the start-up of the company, and the founds feel confident in their product.
