Universal has acquired the film rights for an untitled comedy starring Lonely Island, i.e. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.
They will star in the comedy, which is said to be music-related, which isn't too surprising given the trio, and all three will also produce, Deadline reports. Schffer, who helmed Hot Rod, and Taccone will direct the film.
Lonely Island is best known for the Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts, which Taccone and Schaffer often directed and all three would appear, including "I'm on a Boat" and "D--k in a Box." Taccone also had directing duties for MacGruber.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Judd Apatow is on board to produce the film through Judd Apatow Productions. Senior vice president of production Erik Baiers was tapped to oversee the film for Universal.
Samberg is currently starring in the hit Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while Schaffer most recently directed The Watch, which Taccone appeared in.
