This is certainly out-of-left-field casting 101. Vince Vaughn is reportedly interested in joining HBO’s True Detective as another movie star interested in turning to TV to revitalize his career. Elisabeth Moss, who certainly doesn’t have any sins to atone for after her performance on Mad Men, was also linked to the project late Monday.

Let’s start with the Vaughn casting, which sounds completely crazy. The Wedding Crashers star hasn’t had a hit in years and joining True Detective would be the best way to get back in Hollywood’s good graces. The casting was first reported by TV Line, which did not reveal what character he would be playing.

However, TheWrap did get a hold of plot details and notes, including additional casting. Not only is Moss being considered for the female lead, but The Killing’s Michelle Forbes could get another key female role.

TheWrap’s plot outline sounds like a worthy successor to season one’s bizarre murder in the Louisiana bayou. As creator Nic Pizzolatto has teased in the past, this season will happen in California. The central murder case would be the death of Ben Caspar, a corrupt city manager whose brutal murder captures the attention of three law enforcement agencies.

Vaughn would play Frank Semyon, a businessman working for a local mayor and others to cash-in on a high-speed rail system in the state. Moss would play Monterey sheriff Ani Bezzerides (possibly named after the great noir writer A.I. Bezzerides).

Colin Farrell is still in talks to play one-half of the main detective duo. Taylor Kitsch is in talks to play the other half, a military veteran haunted by violence.
