A collection of music memorabilia that belonged to the late country icon Waylon Jennings is hitting the auction block and will give a Willie Nelson fan the opportunity to own a pair of Nelson’s braids. However, that’s just one of the many unique items in the collection available.
The auction is set to take place on Oct. 5 in Phoenix at the Musical Instrument Museum. Over 2,000 items will be available in 500 individual lots, notes Rolling Stone.
The most important piece in the collection is, without a doubt, the Ariel Cyclone motorcycle once owned by Buddy Holly. Jennings was actually a member of Holly’s Crickets and gave up his seat on the fateful flight that ended the lives of Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.
Other items of interest include a Muhammad Ali robe and a letter John Lennon wrote to Jennings. The braids from Nelson in the collection were cut off in 1983 for Jennings to show his support for Jennings’ battle to stay sober. Handwritten Jennings lyrics and other papers will also be up for sale.
As Taste of Country notes, Jennings died in 2002 at age 64. The auction will help raise awareness for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and New York-based Guernsey's is administering the auction. The items will be on display later this month before the sale.
