Bleecker Street picks up Toby Maguire's chess biopic 'Pawn Sacrifice'

Tobey Maguire's chess drama Pawn Sacrifice sold on Wednesday at the Toronto International Film Festival to Bleecker Street.

The film doesn't premiere until Thursday, but potential buyers were given a peek at the film, which also stars Liev Schreiber, TheWrap reports.

Maguire plays Bobby Fischer, while the Ray Donovan actor is Boris Spassky. Peter Sarsgaard also stars in the film.

Ed Zwick both directs and produces, alongside Maguire and Gail Katz. Pawn Sacrifice was written by Steven Knight.

The drama is about the famous 1972 chess battle amid Cold War politics between Fischer and Spassky, which was nicknamed the Match of the Century, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pawn Sacrifice is Bleecker Street's first TIFF purchase this year. The distribution company is lead by Andrew Karpen, who previously was an executive at Focus Features. Manoj Bhargava, who is the 5-hour Energy founder, backs the new company.

Lionsgate will distribute the chess biopic internationally.
