From humble Durham, North Carolina, musician Brett Harris has emerged, taking pop music by storm with two successful EPs and one full length album. His latest EP, Mr. Sunshine is set to be released on September 9th, and is nothing short of brilliant, easy-going music by a talented singer-songwriter musician.
Much of Brett’s musical style can be compared to The Beatles’ later work, and I found myself comparing him artists such as Ben Folds, James Morrison, and Eric Hutchinson. His voice is soft and silky, making it easy to close your eyes and just immerse yourself in his music.
The EP opens with “Out of the Blue,” one of the tracks that struck me as sounding very similar to some Beatles songs, especially with with the combination of guitars and percussion to Brett’s soft voice. The second song, “Mr. Sunshine” is one of the much more upbeat tracks on the EP. The track features a nice, upbeat guitar that dominates throughout the song, sweet background vocals, and even what sounds to be saxophones and possibly trumpets in the background. The third track is a live recording of Alex Chilton’s “Kanga Roo,” that, as a live track, is powerful, soulful, and a nice addition to the entire EP. The last track on the album is “When You Get the Chance,” and it ends the EP on a bit of a bittersweet note with Harris singing to a lover that he’s drifted apart from. The keyboard in the background of the song adds a nice element to the mostly acoustic song.
Brett Harris is certainly a talented artists that has garnered many fans as a musician, and it would be interesting to see where his career goes with his music that offers a kind of different, interesting pop sound.
