The Royal Free Hospital in London announced that the first British patient to have contracted Ebola while in West Africa has recovered and was discharged on Wednesday.
Reuters noted that volunteer nurse William Pooley contracted the debilitating disease late last month in Sierra Leone. He was eventually flown to his homeland and treated with the experimental ZMapp drug.
The World Health Organization endorsed the use of the drug in August.
"Following 10 days of successful treatment in the high level isolation unit - the only one in the UK - Mr Pooley is being discharged from the Royal Free Hospital today," a post on the hospital’s website read.
The virus that has been plaguing multiple African nations for months is often fatal. It is spread through close human contact.
Some of the symptoms can include arthritis, chills, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and internal as well as external bleeding.
BBC News reported that the 29-year-old was in the early stages of the Ebola and was not yet bleeding.
Pooley said he feels very lucky to be alive.
