Bruce Morton, who was an award-winning CBS and CNN correspondent, died at the age of 83 on Friday at his Washington, D.C. home from cancer.
He was a longtime newsman for CBS, spanning nearly 30 years there, between 1964 and 1993. During his CBS career, CBS News reports, he anchored CBS Morning News and was a congressional correspondent.
He cover a variety of important congressional meetings and hearings, such as the House Judiciary Committee's on the President Richard Nixon impeachment and the confirmation hearings on two Supreme Court justices.
Though he also covered other news events for CBS, including several NASA space launches, his daughter, Sarah Morton, said he preferred politics.
"He loved politics and loved covering politicians," Sarah said, who was a CBS News producer. "He recognized that what politicians did had real effects on people's lives."
According to Reuters, Morton eventually decided to work for CNN starting in 1993 before he retired 13 years later.
Despite leaving after 29 years for another network, Morton will likely be remembered most for his time at CBS. Through 29 years with the network he won six Emmys and even won a Peabody Award in 1976.
