Gaming company Activision Blizzard is not shy when it comes to boasting about their accomplishments and they are now proud to say that their newest video game release, Destiny, holds the title of most successful new franchise launch in gaming history.
"Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a press release. "Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry's history. It's also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision's next billion dollar brand."
Destiny can be described as an online cooperative and competitive first person shooter. Players will first create their character and then enter the world where they will defend our planet from invading alien forces such as the Hive, the Fallen, the Vex, and the Cabal. Although Activision has not officially labeled the game as an MMO, or massive multiplayer online game, Destiny does have many MMO elements such as requiring players to team up together online to complete difficult missions that they would not normally be able to complete on their own.
Bungie Chief Operation Officer Pete Parsons told USA Today, "The goal with Destiny is to put the player and our community at the center of everything we do, let them become legends and share that experience with their friends even if they want to play by themselves."
PS4 and Xbox One consoles have been out for almost a year now but game developers are still creating new video games for previous generation consoles, at least for now.
When asked about the difference between playing Destiny on a previous generation console versus a current generation console, Bungie President Harold Ryan told The Seattle Times, "For us the thing that was really important is we have one design for all the consoles so it’s the same game whether you’re playing on a 360, Xbox One, PS4 or PS3. When you look at the current gen, share capabilities, socially oriented design, it’s going to be way cool to instantly stream your game play or connect your videos outside the game."
