Dexter star, Michael C. Hall, will be returning back to the Broadway stage in October playing Hedwig, a transgender German rockstar, in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a role that is currently being played by actor and fellow Broadway star, Andrew Rannells.
According to NY Daily News, Hall will begin the playing the role of Hedwig on October 16th at the Belasco Theater, and his run will end on January 4th. Rannells' last show playing the flamboyant character will be October 12th.
Prior to Rannells taking on the role, however, the role of Hedwig was expertly played by Tony award winning actor, Neil Patrick Harris. During his run in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the play became one of the top-sellers on Broadway, with many weeks gaining a million dollars in revenue, reports Variety. The play still saw decent profits with Rannells taking on the role, with weeks often being in the $650,000 range.
Hall's broadway debut was in 1996, where he was an understudy for the play, Skylight. Hall's other Broadway roles include the Emcee in Cabaret (1999), and Billy Flynn in Chicago (2002).
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of a fictional rock n' roll band headed by Hedwig, and in between songs, Hedwig gives the audience a look into her life as a transgender German woman, sharing humorous and heartbreaking stories, including the story her botched sex change operation. The play was written by John Cameron Mitchell.
