Jose Antonio Vargas, an award winning journalist and filmmaker, is not a former mayor of Los Angeles. However, the Drudge Report raised eyebrows for confusing Vargas with real former LA mayor Antonio Vargas in a tweet.
Vargas, 33, famously revealed that he is an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 New York Times column. He was later detained, but ultimately released by border patrol in McAllen, Texas when he tried to get on a flight to LA, notes The Los Angeles Times.
On Monday, Vargas - who was born in the Philippines - published a magazine piece in Politico, in which he explained why he turned himself in back in 2011. The piece is timely, since the immigration debate has heated up with new concerns over children from South America coming to the U.S.
Although Vargas has nothing in common with Mayor Antonio Vargas, the Drudge Report sent a link to the Politico piece on Twitter, assuming they were one in the same. “Former LA Mayor: Why I turned myself in to DHS,” the site wrote.
Vargas later replied to the right-leaning site, writing, “fyi, I am not Antonio Villaraigosa. We're not all alike.”
Of course, Drudge has not responded and has yet to take down the tweet.
