Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg agrees to invest $19 billion at an event in Mexico in an attempt to connect up to 3 billion people.

According to The Register, Zuckerberg launched his internet.org project in 2013 to “make affordable internet access available to everyone.” This included a trip south of the border where on Friday the CEO announced that Facebook will join forces with WhatsApp messaging service, which came with a $19 billion price tag.

It is only fitting that the social media mogul documented the meeting announcing on his Facebook page that he “enjoyed meeting Mexicos President.” He further gives details that “the internet offers huge opportunities for Mexico, from helping to share its talent, culture and businesses with the world, and making government services more efficient.”

The event was coordinated by Mexican business tycoon Carlos Slim, owner of Telmex, otherwise known as the biggest telephone provider in Mexico. The internet.org project plans to work with phone operators in order to expand the reaches of Internet access around developing countries.
