Jon Koppenhaver, also known as the former MMA fighter War Machine, was in court Wednesday, nearly a month after he allegedly beat his ex-girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack. He faces several charges, including attempted murder and sexual assault.

Early last month, Mack took to Twitter to share graphic photos of injuries, claiming that Koppenhaver went to her Las Vegas home and beat her up, leaving her with 18 broken bones. She also claimed that he beat a friend who was with her.

Koppenhaver also used Twitter to give his side of the story, bemoaning his luck and claiming that he was going to propose to Mack, although Mack claimed they broke up back in May. He claimed he was defending himself. However, he was not arrested at the time and went on the run for a week.

He was finally caught in Simi Valley, California on Aug. 15 and extradited back to Nevada.

According to the Associated Press, he was initially arrested on warrant with seven charges that included battery, assault and lewdness. Prosecutors added several more charges, including attempted murder and sexual assault. TMZ notes that he is now facing 32 total charges.

During Wednesday's hearing Koppenhaver pleaded not guilty. His attorney said that prosecutors are “overzealous.”

“I think the public will understand that War Machine's a character,” attorney Brandon Sua said outside of court. “He is controversial and people need to understand where to draw that line from his character as War Machine and a person as Jon Koppenhaver, because that's who he is.''

Koppenhaver, who did legally change his name to War Machine but will be called “Koppenhaver” in court, is being held without bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 17.
