We haven't heard much about it in a while, but Shawn Levy says that a sequel to the 2011 film Real Steel is in the works.
While premiering his new film This is Where I Leave You at the Toronto International Film Festival, Levy was asked about the future of the Real Steel franchise by Coming Soon.
Levy said that he's been "quietly developing" a sequel for three and half years, and that he and the team have come up with some great ideas.
Levy went on to say that he and Hugh Jackman would only make the film if both the plot and the character journeys felt fresh, but, so far, they haven't been able to accomplish both at the same time.
Real Steel, which starred Jackman as a former boxer in a world where boxers are replaced by robots, was not a big hit domestically. It made $85 million at the domestic Box Office, according to Box Office Mojo, though it did much better overseas with a $213 foreign gross.
However, Levy noted that while it wasn't a huge hit in America, the passion among fans for another installment is there, and that he wants to get it done as soon as possible before the audience isn't there anymore.
