Authorities said that a Utah elementary school teacher carrying a concealed firearm on school property, accidentally shot herself in the leg on Thursday.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the unidentified teacher was in the Westbrook Elementary School restroom around 8:45 a.m. when the gun accidentally went off.

No other faculty members or students were in the restroom with her when the shooting
occurred.

ABC 4 Utah reported that classes started at 9:00 a.m. as usual and an ambulance arrived a short time later. The teacher was transported to a local hospital where she is recovering from the gunshot wound.

"She was in the restroom, the gun discharged at some point, she was struck in the leg, and my understanding is that the bullet actually exited the leg as well," said Ben Horsley, spokesman for Granite School District.

The station also noted that the woman did have a permit to carry the firearm, but school officials said they were not aware of it.

In the State of Utah, residents with concealed-weapons permits are allowed to carry guns in public schools.
