"Christopher Nolan is out promoting his new film Interstellar, and that's caused a lot of people to reflect on his past films and speculate on what he might do next. But despite the success of the Dark Knight movies, Nolan says that he probably won't be returning to the superhero genre anytime soon.
Nolan is the director of the hit Dark Knight trilogy of Batman films, and he was asked if he might return to direct any of the upcoming Marvel or DC films. According to Time Out, the director said that his involvement in the superhero genre was a good decade in his life and that he finds it hard to imagine coming back to it. ""But never say never,"" he added.
So although Nolan didn't close the door to superhero movies entirely, it sounds like he isn't really interested in doing another movie like The Dark Knight, moving on to another genres like a sci-fi space epic with Interstellar.
It sounds like DC was also really hoping Nolan would return to superhero movies. According to The Wall Street Journal, one of the reasons DC waited as long as they did to get started on their massive franchise is that they were hoping Nolan would direct or produce Justice League or the Batman reboot.
As we've previously reported, DC has a pretty insane schedule of upcoming movies, the most immediate of which will be Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.
Prior to the start of this new franchise with Man of Steel, Nolan's Dark Knight franchise was really the main thing DC had going for it on film. The Dark Knight grossed $1 billion at the box office, as did The Dark Knight Rises, according to Box Office Mojo. Meanwhile their other films, like Green Lantern have been less successful, with that movie making a little over $100 million domestically on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
So it makes sense that DC would want to hang on to Nolan, but it sounds like the director wants to branch out and that we'll be seeing some fresh new ideas from him in the future.
Nolan's new movie, starring Matthew McConaughey, Interstellar, opens in theaters on Nov. 7.
