The Foo Fighters have released the first single off of their upcoming release Sonic Highways, “Something From Nothing.” This new song combines the classic rock elements that have not only made the Foo Fighters stand outs on the charts and with fans, but also showcases that Sonic Highways is moving in a more mature direction. This album is about the Foo Fighters making a statement musically and personally. Sonic Highways is taking the band out of the garage and on a musical cross country journey.
“Something From Nothing” opens with simple guitar chords and the subtle vocals of Ghrol. Instrumentally, this single takes the band in a new direction, focusing more on different electric guitar rifts and combining a more modern sound with hard-hitting drum beats and bass. This single takes the time to build upon it and really frames the lyrics that express the path that the band has been on musically and personally.
About three minutes into the single, the old school aggressive and powerful rock ‘n’ roll sound that fans have come to know from the Foo Fighters is on full display. Ghrol doesn’t hold back with his vocals and starts to yell, “I’m something, from nothing.” Hearing a more modern side to the band mixed with their classic roots is something new and noteworthy. Rock ‘n’ roll can change and evolve but should never lose the soul of what this genre is.
Sonic Highways was recorded in a variety of cities around the United States. The Foo Fighters travel to different locations to gain inspiration from the heart of America and the people who live in these cities everyday. It seems as though “Something From Nothing” could apply to the band itself but to fans as well. Fans can relate around the United States, as many have experienced hard times and struggles over the past few years.
If this single is any indication to which direction Sonic Highways is going, it will not only show the musical styling of the Foo Fighters but their ability to keep their rock ‘n’ roll grunge roots; all while exploring different aspects of their music in a modern and extraordinary way.
