An experiment featuring a woman walking around New York City ten hours straight shows just how much she gets harassed in that amount of time.
An anti-street harassment organization called Hollaback! teamed up with marketing agency Rob Bliss Creative to demonstrate what women often deal with when they walk alone – and the video is shocking.
Slate noted there were the occasional seemingly friendly “good morning” comments, but they didn’t compare to the amount of unsolicited cat-calling there was. Someone even actually yelled to the volunteer test subject, Shoshana Roberts, “Somebody’s acknowledging you for being beautiful! You should say thank you more!”
There’s been a big response to this viral video on Twitter, with some saying the woman was not being harassed, the men were just being annoying.
In all, Roberts was cat-called 108 times in the 10 hours of the study, not including winks and whistling.
NBC reports Rob Bliss, who walked ahead of Roberts with a hidden camera in his backpack, said the reason they did this video was to show men who don’t even realize what they’re doing that it really is a problem.
“They see it as just an innocent compliment but are missing the forest for the trees,” he said. “I intentionally left out any messaging and just laid bare what it's like, so that everyone could objectively see the reality of this problem.”
