James Cameron isn't involved in the upcoming Terminator reboot Terminator Genisys in any official capacity, but he apparently still contributed something major to the movie: the idea behind bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger to the franchise.
In an interview with Deadline, James Cameron said that he didn't want to be involved with the movie but did want Arnold to come back, so he pointed out the fact that the outer covering of the Terminator isn't actually synthetic. It's actually organic, so it can therefore age.
Cameron said that because of this, you could have a Terminator sent back in time who failed his mission, and afterwards ended up just continuing to live in society. "Because he is a learning computer and has a brain as a central processor he could actually become more human as he went along without getting discovered," Cameron said.
It's not clear if this idea of a Terminator who failed his mission and is still living in society will actually be the plot of Terminator Genisys, but it seems that Cameron at least planted the idea of having Schwarzenegger return while also having it make sense that there's a much older Terminator than in the previous films.
Of course, Terminator: Genisys is a complete reboot to the franchise, as we previously reported, so the movie would technically not even need to explain Schwarzenegger's age, since it has no prior continuity to adhere to.
Cameron said that he has read the script for Genisys, but isn't really emotionally invested in how the franchise turns out. "If it's not good, it doesn't really bother me personally," he said. The director did say however that he thinks based on the script, there's a good chance the movie will turn out well.
Terminator: Genisys will be directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Thor: The Dark World.) It will star Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. Arnold Schwarzenegger will also star as the Terminator. The film is set to launch a new trilogy of Terminator films.
