The gunman who admitted to fatally shooting a fellow student at Purdue University earlier this year was found dead in his cell on Tuesday evening from an apparent suicide.

FOX 59 reported that Kirk Freeman, the public defender for convicted killer Cody Cousins, said that he was notified on Wednesday morning that Cousins had committed suicide at the Indiana State Prison.

Prison officials said that several attempts were made to revive the 24-year-old after he was found unresponsive in his single cell. Those attempts ultimately failed and authorities said he had deep wounds, which appeared to be self-inflicted, on his arms and neck. The medical examiner’s office has not yet determined the exact cause of death.

Reuters noted that cousins was convicted and sentenced to 65 years behind bars after he plead guilty to killing Andrew Boldt in front of other students on campus last January.

During his trial last month, prosecutors said that Cousins was jealous of Boldt. Cousins eventually told the courtroom that he stabbed and shot the 21-year-old multiple times just because he “wanted to” do it.
