Writer/director Tom McCarthy has distinguished himself as one of the best new filmmakers in Hollywood with indie hits like The Station Agent, The Vistor and Win Win. But apparently he dropped the ball with his newest, The Cobbler, starring Adam Sandler, which received scathing reviews after its premiere at TIFF earlier this year. Now the first trailer for the film can let people see what people were talking about, and maybe find what went wrong.
The first trailer, from Voltage Picture, shows Sandler as a mild-mannered shoe repairman who happens upon an old sewing machine that magically gives him the chance to live in the lives of its owner. The premise is solid, but the trailer looks sadly wishy-washy, with many comparing the trailer to something seen in Sandler's Funny People.
The Cobbler currently hosts a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also doesn't have a distributor in the U.S, but co-starring Cliff "Method Man" Smith, Dustin Hoffman, Steve Buscemi and Ellen Barkin, The Cobbler will probably find its way to U.S. theaters one of these days.
While it doesn't look great, it looks better than most of Sandler's recent efforts, and, at the very least, looks watchable.
