All fraternities and sororities have been suspended at West Virginia University after an 18-year-old freshman was found unconscious at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house early Thursday morning and rushed to Ruby Memorial hospital in Morgantown.
The Buffalo, New York native, Nolan Michael Burch, was placed in intensive care after authorities said he had no pulse and was not breathing when cops were called to the house.
Corey Farris, the university’s dean of students, said in a statement, "The action to halt fraternity and sorority activities while these matters are being reviewed is being done with the well-being and safety of our students in mind. That is — and must always be — our foremost priority,” NBC News reports.
This decision was made by the Inter-Fraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, WVUToday reports.
This incident comes just a week after 19 pledges of a different fraternity got into a brawl and police were called to break it up.
WKBW notes Burch’s current condition isn’t known and university police are investigating both incidents.
