While promoting the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, actor Andy Serkis naturally has to respond to questions about the upcoming third film in the new series. While many assumed this next film would be the last, at least for this new series, Serkis stated in a recent interview that that may not be the case.

Speaking with MTV, Serkis revealed that this new Planet of the Apes series may not be a trilogy, but rather a four or five film story. While its still too early to tell, of course, the actor believes there may be more to Cesar's story than just the next film.

“It might be three films," he said. "It could be four. It could be five. Who knows? The journey will continue. It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one. The point being, eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at The Planet of the Apes, but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.”

Details on the new film are being kept close to hand, as one would expect, but this also comes from the fact that they are still very early in the process.

“To be honest, it’s very, very early in where we choose to drop our anchor in the next film, so it could be five years after the event," Serkis said. "It could be the night after the events of where we left Dawn, so it’s very difficult to know where the story is going right at this moment because it’s being written as we speak. I know part of the desire for Matt [Reeves] to do this next movie about continuing the enjoyment of seeing these apes evolve.”

Dawn director Matt Reeves will be back to helm the new, upcoming Planet of the Apes film. Where he takes the story is anyone's guess, literally, but as long as the quality remains high, it's hard to believe any fans will complain.

Meanwhile, Serkis is keeping very busy at the moment on other, non Planet of the Apes, both as an actor and director. He will next be seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015. He also will be starring in Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18, 2015. He also set to appear in a new Adventures of Tintin movie somewhere down the road, and is currently in pre-production on his directorial debut Jungle Book: Origins, which he will also act in as Baloo.
