Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, is being heavily nominated for an independent film awards show, among other films.
The movie, entitled Birdman or (The Unexplained Virtue of Ignorance), was revealed on Tuesday to have earned six nominations for the 2015 Spirit Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Categories that Birdman was nominated in included Best Male Lead, Best Director, and even Best Feature. The film was directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu.
Other independent films such as Boyhood, Nightcrawler, and Selma each earned five nominations, Reuters reported. Except for Nightcrawler, those films were also nominated for Best Feature along with Whiplash and Love Is Strange.
Birdman, which also starred Edward Norton and Emma Stone, focused on a formerly major superhero actor played by Keaton whose career ended long before, according to THR, and is trying to revive his career with a stage play. Keaton will face competition from Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, David Oyelowo for Selma, and John Lithgow in Love Is Strange in the Best Male Lead category.
THR also reported that The Spirit Awards will happen in Santa Monica on February 21, 2015. It will begin at 2:00 p.m Pacific Time, and have a live showing on IFC.
