A year after she told the press that she plans on marrying him, Afton Elaine Burton, 26, and notorious mass murderer Charles Manson, 80, have gotten a marriage licence. The two have until February to tie the knot.
Burton, who likes to be known as “Star,” and Manson got the marriage certificate on Nov. 7, according to The Associated Press. She told the AP that they plan on marrying next month, although they have not set a firm date.
“Y'all can know that it's true. It's going to happen,” Burton said. "I love him. I'm with him. There's all kinds of things."
Mason isn’t entitled to conjugal visits, since he has no parole date and won’t be eligible until 2027. Still, Burton believes that by getting married, she will have access to information that only his family can see.
“There's certain things next of kin can do,” she told the AP, but didn’t give any specifics on what she’s hoping to find.
Last year, Burton and Manson spoke with Rolling Stone, confirming that they plan on marrying. Burton has been making visits to Manson since she was 19.
While Manson said in November 2013 that they were only playing up the plans of marriage “for public consumption,” Burton told the AP that this wasn’t true.
A California Department of Corrections spokeswoman did confirm that the license was transmitted and that the couple will be allowed 10 guests who aren’t prisoners. It the wedding does happen, it would likely happen on the first Saturday of the month, the rep said.
Manson was convicted of seven murders, including the murder of actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant at the time, in 1969. Two other members of the Manson “family,” Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel, are still in prison, while Susan Atkins died in jail from cancer.
