The Cleveland Police Department has released a video of an officer shooting a 12-year-old boy in front of a recreation center after believing his air gun was real.
NBC News noted that the black-and-white surveillance video shows the boy, Tamir Rice, on the sidewalk waving the pellet gun around.
Next, the clip shows two officers arriving on the scene and pulling up to a gazebo where Rice is standing.
The footage is not very not clear and there is no audio. The officers can be seen exiting the vehicle and that’s when they said Rice reached for what they thought was a real gun. Within seconds, he is shot in the torso.
Law enforcement officials said that the boy was given CPR after he was struck.
As previously reported, police were responding to a 911 call of someone in the park holding a pistol and pointing it at people. The caller does tell the dispatcher that the gun may be fake.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office investigates the case.
