Colin Farrell wrote a letter addressed to the country of Ireland, pleading with its citizens to vote in favor of gay rights.
The letter was published by Sunday World and recalls the bullies his brother, Eamon, had to face while growing up as a gay man.
"I don’t know where those bullies are now, the ones who beat him regularly. Maybe some of them have found peace and would rather forget their own part of a painful past," Farrell said in the letter. "But I do know where my brother is. He’s at home in Dublin living in peace and love with his husband of some years, Steven. They are about the healthiest and happiest couple I know. That’s why this is personal to me."
Farrell then goes on to say that it was "insane" that his brother had to travel to Canada just to get married and hopes that Ireland will give homosexuals living in the country the chance to get married.
According to Irish Central, the country will vote on gay marriage in May 2015. Early polls have shown that around 76 percent will vote in favor of gay marriage but the country and Farrell won't know for sure until May of next year.
Colin Farrell can next be seen in HBO's second season of True Detective.
