Nicki Minaj’s new song, “Only” which features Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown, has caused quite the controversy. Critics are arguing that its lyric video portrays aspects relatable to Nazi Germany, glorifying support for Adolf Hitler.
Abraham H. Foxman, the national director for the ADL and a Holocaust survivor, told ABC News “Nicki Minaj’s new video disturbingly evokes Third Reich propaganda and constitutes a new low for pop culture’s exploitation of Nazi symbolism." Whether it be a planned attempt or a simple coincidence, Foxman acknowledged the irony behind the video’s debut date, which happened to be on the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a day that signaled the holocaust’s beginning.
Many other organizations, such as the Anti-Defamation League have argued its offensive content. For, the hanging red, black and white flags featured in the military based video, hold swastika-like symbols.
However, Minaj is taking full responsibility according to MTV.com. She took to Twitter, Tuesday morning, to say, “I didn't come up w/the concept, but I'm very sorry & take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. I'd never condone Nazism in my art.”
It had been reported that the artist responsible for the controversial cartoon was rather, inspired by shows such as Metalocalypse and Sin City.
