Daniel Bruhl is going to get a major role in a big part of Marvel’s Phase 3 plan. The German actor won the villain role in Captain America: Civil War.
Marvel announced the casting late Friday, but didn’t say exactly what part he will have.
Bruhl earned acclaim last year for playing Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s Rush, which earned him Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA nominations. He is also well known for his part in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds.
Other films on Bruhl’s resume include The Bourne Ultimatum, Good Bye Lenin!, and The Fifth Estate. He also stars in John Wells’ untitled chef movie with Bradley Cooper.
Civil War will mark the debut of Chadwick Boseman as The Black Panther, which Marvel announced last month. Chris Evans is also returning as Cap, while Robert Downey Jr. will play Iron Man again in a key role. The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo will direct again.
“With Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige said.
Deadline reports that Bruhl will be playing the villain.
Civil War opens on May 6, 2016.
