Dave Chappelle only recently returned to public life and sat down with GQ to talk about his career and his life. The topic of Donald Sterling came up, and the Chappelle’s Show star was asked about his thoughts on the reaction to Sterling’s racist comments.

The comedian, who performed at Radio City Music Hall in June, told the magazine that he didn’t agree with the swift reaction to Sterling.

After a secretly recorded tape of Sterling talking with his mistress leaked on TMZ, the former Los Angeles Clippers owner lost the team and was indefinitely banned from the NBA. Steve Ballmer later purchased the team for $2 billion.

“Ultimately, I don't think he should have lost his team,” Chappelle told GQ. “I don't like the idea that someone could record a secret conversation and that a person could lose their assets from that, even though I think what he said was awful.”

Chappelle continued, “When you think about the intimacy of a situation, like, can a man just chill with his mistress in peace? I just don't like when things like that happen, because if they take shit away for things that people say that are objectionable, I may not have anything in a few years. Granted, I don't think I say s**t like ‘Stop bringing white people to my game.’”

Chappelle is one of GQ’s Men of the Year, earning the magazine’s Comeback of the Year title. He famously walked away from Chappelle’s Show in 2006 and has recently started performing again.

He also told GQ that one thing on his bucket list is doing “this thing where I guest-star on as many television shows as I possibly can. I love television.”
