In 1979, Dustin Hoffman was starring in Kramer vs. Kramer, the performance that eventually got him his first Oscar. In pursuing future projects, however, it appears he's attempting to recreate some of that year's good fortunes, for he, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are in talks to star in Zach Braff's remake of the '79 caper comedy Going in Style, starring George Burns.
Variety got the exclusive on the casting report. They also report that, while Braff was said to be in talks to helm the remake earlier this week for New Line, negotiations have not been officially set.
This new film is setting up a spring shoot. The original, directed by Martin Brest and also starring Art Carney and Lee Strasberg alongside Burns, is centered on three retirees who, bored with their lives, wear Grucho Marx glasses and execute a bank heist.
Before Braff, Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), who wrote the remake's script, was being sought to direct the caper remake but there is no word on why Melfi is no longer helming the feature. Producing for Warner Bros. will be Donald De Line, while Tony Bill, producer of the original film, will executive produce this new movie.
As for the Oscar-winners set to star in the film, Hoffman, having made his directorial debut Quartet last year, has recently been seen in Chef, as well as Boychoir and The Cobbler if you were on the festival circuit. He will also be seen in Icon and will be heard in Kung Fu Panda 3 next year. Freeman, meanwhile, was heard in The Lego Movie and seen in Transcendence, Lucy and Dolphin Tale 2 this year, and will be seen in Ted 2 and London Has Fallen next year.
Caine, last seen in Interstellar and Stoneheart Asylum, will be seen in Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Early Years and The Last Witch Hunter next year.
