Channing Tatum has been talking about it for nearly a year and it appears that his dreams are coming true. 20th Century Fox is moving ahead with a solo X-Men movie starring Tatum as Gambit.

Gambit was among the characters created at the height of the X-Men’s return to popularity in the early 1990s and has the ability to charge matter to make it explode on impact. That matter of choice for him is cards. He was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990.

Deadline, which first confirmed that the studio is moving ahead with the film, reports that Josh Zetumer (Robocop) was hired to write. Simon Kinberg will be among the producers. It isn’t quite clear what the plot of the solo film will be.

As EW points out, the character did make an appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with Taylor Kitsch (The Normal Heart) playing the character.

Tatum is currently working on Magic Mike XXL and gave an emotional performance in the upcoming Foxcatcher. He’s been linked to the Gambit project for months and recently talked about it earlier this month.

“I don’t want to give too much away because we don’t know that much right now other than who Gambit is,” he told MTV. “We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but not for the first one.”
