Fried Goat hail from Augusta, Georgia, and their music is more than just “southern rock” label that has been associated with their band. The Georgia 5-piece does describe themselves as “southern rock with a conscious,” but with their second self-titled album, the band blends together various genres, giving their undeniably southern sound a pop twist.
Their second album was released back in February, and on their website the band themselves describe Fried Goat as sweeter and, “A little more love-struck. Possibly wiser,” than their debut album, Bon Appetit.
Fried Goat certainly has a sound all their own, and with their self-titled sophomore effort, that statement couldn’t be more true. The band’s sound is crisp without sounding too pristine, and each of their songs display the band’s skills vocally and instrumentally.
Fried Goat opens up ready to give music lovers something edgy to listen to with “Remember.” It’s definitely one of the more rough, raw songs on the album, and immediately captures listeners, leaving them ready to listen to what the rest of the album will give.
The album features incredible instrumentation throughout, notably on tracks like “Takeaway,” “She Makes Mistakes,” and “Don’t Feed the Animals,” with the latter actually being an instrumental interlude on the album. Fried Goat ends with “Fake Lumberjack Blues,” a song that’s the most significantly slowed down song on the album, featuring a mandolin and harmonica, that capture a bluesy sound perfectly and ends the album sweetly.
One of the tracks that proves to be one of the more musically interesting songs on the album is “Nothing You Can Say,” that has two distinct sounds. The first is more of a hard rock sound, that interestingly turns into a softer, more light-hearted sound. Throughout the track, it’s almost as if there’s a competition between the two sounds, but it keeps the track interesting for the listener. Not to mention that the lyrics really do have a great message with lyrics that say “Don’t forget who means the most/ Let them know when you’re down/ Take a break and walk away/ Be surprised at what is found today.”

Fried Goat has something for lovers of rock music, especially if you enjoy the upbeat, catchy, raw sound of southern rock. Those that are already fans of Fried Goat will find that the band’s second album has stayed true their infectious sound, but have managed to incorporate new sounds into their music that keeps the band’s sound fresh and fun to listen to.
The band has even put a Christmas song on the album (“Barn”) that’s perfect for the holiday season. Fried Goat also features a cover of The Charlie Daniels Band’s, “Long Haired Country Boy,” that the band calls “an almost ska version” of the song.
