In case you the billboards in Times Square aren’t big enough for you, one that’s even bigger will be going live this week, with Google as the first advertiser.
On Tuesday, a giant billboard with 24 million LED pixels will be going live, beginning with animation from the Universal Everything studio. However, on Nov. 24, the space will be taken over by Google, which has it exclusively through the end of the year.
And it’s not cheap for Google. According to the New York Times, the billboard will cost an advertiser $2.5 million for four weeks. Clear Channel Outdoor New York is selling the ad space.
The billboard is eight feet tall and is the length of a football field, notes The Associated Press. It is in front of the Marriott Marquis hotel and covers the “bow tie,” with Broadway intersecting Seventh Avenue.
The billboard’s launch is well timed, since it means that Google’s message will be seen in cameras during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Indeed, the billboards themselves have become sort of a tourist attraction.
“The signs really are part of the culture, part of the fabric of the excitement of this city,” Vornado CEO Steven Roth told the Times. “And, by the way, we are in it for the money, and they are an interesting part of our business.”
Google and Clear Channel didn’t comment on their deal.
