Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful video games of all time. The Grand Theft Auto franchise is known for larger than life characters, intense action, and impressive, expansive cities, but there's one aspect that ties everything together, the music.
To celebrate the new release of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we are reviewing the original digital soundtrack for the game which first came out for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which is the one we are reviewing, is no joke, boasting a total of 59 songs in the complete collection. The music in the game perfectly captures the world of Los Santos using a variety of trance and hip hop music.
One of the stand out songs is the theme song, "Welcome to Los Santos" by Oh No. Other notable artists that make an appearance on the soundtrack include Tyler the Creator and A$AP Rocky.
Another great part of the digital soundtrack is the original score that was composed for the game by a major collaboration between Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, The Alchemist, Oh No, and DJ Shadow. This was the first time in any Grand Theft Auto game that Rockstar went through the process of having an original score created. These instrumental tracks played during key missions and moments in the game and added an element of intensity that was missing from previous games in the series. Two of our favorite songs from the original score include "North Yankton Memories" and "The Agency Heist".
The digital soundtrack does not even begin to encompass the entirety of music featured in Grand Theft Auto V considering there are 240 songs that can be heard in the game. Although the digital soundtrack has captured some of the best licensed songs as well as the entire original score, some of the best songs are missing.
One song in particular that we wish was on the soundtrack is "Shine a Light" by the C90s which plays in the game during one of our favorite surprise missions where one of the characters has an acid trip.
With the re-release of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, things just keep getting better. 150 new songs can be heard in the next gen versions including "Feel Good Inc." by The Gorillaz and "Applause" by Lady Gaga.
Rockstar announced that fans of the music can look forward to a limited edition physical copy of the soundtrack featuring 59 songs coming out December 9 on CD and Vinyl.
The Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack is one of the best video game soundtracks in recent years.
