Since it’s been a long time, at least in Hollywood terms, since the first Avatar came out, James Cameron is doing his best to build excitement for the three sequels he plans to make. The first movie won’t be out for another two years, but Cameron assures us that we are going to be amazed.
In an interview with Empire, the Oscar-winning filmmaker said that there was one thing he could tell them about Avatar 2, 3 and 4: “They’re gonna be bitchin.’”
To make sure we got the point, he added, “You will s**t yourself with your mouth wide open.”
The Avatar sequels will have to be technical marvels, just like the first, which was considered a revolutionary step in 3D filmmaking. For Avatar 2, Cameron will be playing with frame speed, doubling up the usual 24 fps frame rate that film typical runs at.
“My thinking at the time was that 60 [FPS] might be a better segue to the video market,” he said, referencing rumors that he might shoot the film in 60 fps. “I’ll be plugging into a system that’s a little more mature, so it makes sense for me to do 48 frames at this point.”
But what about the story? Is Cameron going to go for a cookie-cutter plot like he did for Avatar or try something different? He did say he met with his screenwriting team for seven months to draw out the plots. Last year, Cameron hired Shane Salerno, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Josh Friedman to help him tell the next story in Na’vi history.
“...I didn’t assign each writer which film they were going to work on until the last day,” Cameron explained. “I knew if I assigned them their scripts ahead of time, they’d tune out every time we were talking about the other movie.”
avatar 2 will be released in December 2016. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Sam Worthington are all expected to be back.
