We've been hearing about an Edward Snowden movie for a while now, but we finally have confirmation of who will star in the upcoming Oliver Stone directed film.

According to The Guardian, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Edward Snowden in the upcoming Oliver Stone movie about the NSA and Snowden's leaks.

Oliver Stone is known for directing films such as JFK, Midnight Express, Platoon, and Born on the Fourth of July.

The movie, which does not yet have a title, begins production this January in Munich. It is being produced by independent studio Open Road Films. Moritz Borman, producer on the film, said it was important for the film to be independent so as not to be influenced by political pressures, according to The Guardian.

According to Time, the movie will be based on two books about Snowden: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena.

Edward Snowden is known for leaking classified information from the National Security Agency last year, spawning a huge amount of controversy.

This is actually not the only film about Snowden currently in production. According to The Verge, there is also one from Sony in production based on Glenn Grenwald's book No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the US Surveillance State. That film comes from James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
