Grammy-winning singer Lorde performed for the first time on American television at the American Music Awards Sunday night on ABC.

The 18-year old sang the song she wrote for the newest Hunger Games film Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack entitled "Yellow Flicker Beat." Actress Elizabeth Banks, who stars in the films, introduced the singer before the performance.

Lorde began her performance by singing within a box, moving and dancing along with the music as the music progressed. More than halfway through the song, the box lifted up and Lorde joined a group of motionless people on stage, all dressed in white.

Several times during the performance, the cameras flicked to the crowd, showing singer Taylor Swift, also a friend of Lorde's, dancing and singing along with her neighboring attendees.

As the song closed, the audience cheered in applause, Lorde to take the back of her hand and smear her dark lipstick across her face, a possible symbolic gesture to the song's content.

Lorde was nominated for several awards for the night, including Artist of the Year, Best Female Artist and Best Album. The New Zealand artist left without any awards, loosing to One Direction for both Artist of the Year and Album, Katy Perry for Best Female Artist and Imagine Dragos for Favorite Alternative Rock Artist.
